Circa 2154. The US army lands up in Pandora, an earth-sized moon in outer space. Their objective: to extract the much-needed minerals from Pandora's soil. But before they can do that, they must fight the peace-loving indigenous inhabitants of the alien world, relocate or destroy them with their spies and bombs.

We thought sinking the Titanic was a titan task! Well, this time round, James Cameron chooses to play god and creates a whole new world with such exquisite finesse, aesthete and eye for detail, he almost takes your breath away. In terms of sheer technology, Avatar marks the coming of age of both CGI and 3-D cinema with its art house special effects and its shock and awe treatment.

On the one hand, it's the sheer iridescence of the canvas and the never-before contours of the creatures, the flora, the fauna flying across the screen that makes you marvel at how computers can augment creativity; on the other, it is the umpteen times you jump back to avoid the arrows, the guns or slide away from the floating dandelions and fierce raptors that leaves you completely mesmerised with this brand new cinematic experience. Truly, Cameron's vision of Pandora is pure art, with its tall, wide-eyed, slender, blue Na'vi people, it's post-modern creatures and its verdant greens.

But more than all this, it is Cameron's cry against war and violence that makes Avatar an eloquent testimonial to the present. Mercifully, the film isn't visual extravaganza alone; it has a meaningful story too that could end up making this magnum opus a modern-day parable for pacifists, climatologists, humanists, globalists.... For the filmmaker openly indicts America for its post 9/11 expansionist policies and clearly states: ``when people are sitting on shit that you want, you make them your enemies. That is the only way you justify taking the stuff away from them!'' Stuff? Minerals, here. Oil, in the real world.

It's a simple story, told straight. In this futuristic world, the US Armed Forces discover a source of priceless minerals in Pandora, a distant moon orbiting a star. They want to send in their troops to tame the indigenous Na'vi people, before extracting the minerals. But before they send their daisy-cutters and rocket launchers, they send in humans who have been transformed into Na'vi look-a-likes (they call them avatars) to infiltrate the peace-loving race and learn about their weaknesses and strengths. Enter, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a paraplegic marine, who is promised a pair of legs for betraying the pacifists ofPandora. It doesn't take long before Jake falls in love with the beautiful Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), the daughter of the Na'vi chief, and turns rogue on his own people. Can't blame him really, specially since his boss, Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang) is a mean, macabre, war-mongerer who treats every non-American as ``a fly-bitten savage, living on trees.''

Avatar is indeed a complete cinematic experience, with cinematographer Mauro Fiore, music director James Horner and special effects maestro Joe Letteri joining hands with director/screenwriter James Cameron to create a strong and visually-stirring plea to save the world, before it is too late. And the only way the human species can do it is by abdicating its destructive tendencies. For Indophiles and Indian philosophy enthusiasts,Avatar is a whole treatise on Indianism, from the very word `Avatar' itself. Add to this the blue-skinned, monkey-tailed, god-like Na'vi race and the linkages could be endless....

A word about:

Performances: Surprisingly, there are no big names in Cameron's cast, but the characters are all credible and attention-grabbing. Both Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana sculpt a warm love story as the blue-skinned human avtar and Na'vi woman. The film also marks the return of Sigourney Weaver in another tryst with aliens.

Music: James Horner composes a fine music score that has a fusion blend of both Oriental and the Occidental notes.

Cinematography: Pandora is a visual paradise, with each fern, each dandelion etched out in detail. Kudos to Mauro Fiore for this spledid tribute to Mother Nature.

Story: Cameron's story is both timely and topical with a strong anti-war statement finely blended with the evergreen romance between a human and an alien.

Dialogue: Simple, straight, yet hard-hitting, some of the lines are laced with humour too.

Special Effects: Absolutely first rate...Avatar justifies its bloated budget of being billed as the most expensive Hollywood film at approximately $500 million.

Final Destination 4 - Movie Review

On what should have been a fun-filled day at the races, Nick O'Bannon has a horrific premonition in which a strange sequence of events causes multiple race cars to crash, sending flaming wreckage into the stands, brutally killing his friends and causing the upper deck of the stands to collapse on him. When he comes out of this grisly nightmare Nick panics, persuading his girlfriend, Lori, and their friends, Janet and Hunt, to leave... escaping seconds before Nick's frightening vision becomes a terrible reality. Thinking they've cheated death, the group has a new lease on life, but unfortunately for Nick and Lori, it is only the beginning. As his premonitions continue and the crash survivors begin to die one-by-one--in increasingly gruesome ways--Nick must figure out how to cheat death once and for all before he, too, reaches his final destination.

The dictatorship of the title tells us we shouldn't expect any more of the death defying gore the Final Destination franchise has offered audiences since the first film debuted in 2000 and more than doubled its production budget at the box-office. From that point on every three years has seen a new installment in theaters, but after nine years I would say it is finally time to put the nail in the coffin on this one as not even the fun 3-D effects can distract an audience enough to realize this just isn't fresh or interesting anymore.

Anyone that has seen a trailer for this film already knows we begin this premonition of death at a cheap-o looking hillbilly car race, which may be the first time I have actually seen the use of 3-D make a film look even cheaper as tiny stands filled with 30 or so on-lookers looks like they aren't even part of the action. I mention this only because I thoroughly enjoyed the opening to Final Destination 2 and with David Ellis back in the director's chair for this one, I had hopes for an opening that would rival that log-rolling face-crusher. Instead, CG takes over and bores the audience with each kill looking no different than the last. The best part of the whole thing is a headless dummy mold twitching and spurting blood in the segment's final moments. Sure, it looks fake, but it looks gruesomely fake. After all, I hope they didn't think we thought any of this was real in the first place.

After our lead characters escape certain death, including a role given to Mykelti Williamson as an ex-alcoholic racetrack security guard, we follow this group of goofballs as they try to fool death and escape its plan to finish what it started. It's the last in the franchise, is it possible they finally cheat death and declare check mate?

Expectations for what The Final Destination delivers should be muted. Even if you already know the kills will be ludicrous and the series of events leading up to them improbable, there is still that little something in your head that says, "Oh come on!" even though what follows may be gruesomely delightful. Echoes of "That's stupid," could be heard amongst my midnight viewing audience all while they had a laugh at the slaughter. Hell, if these are your kinds of movies you would be hard-pressed not to enjoy a little of what you see on screen, but only to a certain point.

When bottles of hairspray begin floating in pools of condensation you laugh a little, but roll with it. However, when a fan blows a cart full of liquid explosives across a room later on you can't help but think, "Didn't I see something like this only a few minutes ago?" The answer is yes and at that point tedium set in long ago, even though watching a racist hillbilly meet a gloriously comical demise was rather enjoyable.

Of course, thinking in this kind of a film is frowned upon. You are supposed to sit back, wait for the next person to find their fate at the hands of death's vicious blow and bask in the blood-soaked carnage. The only question is whether you are able to do that entirely. I can't. I love the imaginary kills, but have grown tired of the nonsense in-between. And on top of all that, with this being the final film in this franchise you would think they wouldn't end it with CGI skeletons and not an all out gorefest. It's an ultimate insult to an audience that is supporting this film despite the fact the third one was running on fumes and showed little room to go, but still managed to be far more fun than this one.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Voldemort is tightening his grip on both the Muggle and wizarding worlds and Hogwarts is no longer the safe haven it once was. Harry suspects that dangers may even lie within the castle, but Dumbledore is more intent upon preparing him for the final battle that he knows is fast approaching. Together they work to find the key to unlock Voldemort’s defenses and, to this end, Dumbledore recruits his old friend and colleague, the well-connected and unsuspecting bon vivant Professor Horace Slughorn, whom he believes holds crucial information. Meanwhile, the students are under attack from a very different adversary as teenage hormones rage across the ramparts. Harry finds himself more and more drawn to Ginny, but so is Dean Thomas. And Lavender Brown has decided that Ron is the one for her, only she hadn't counted on Romilda Vane's chocolates! And then there's Hermione, simpering with jealously but determined not to show her feelings. As romance blossoms, one student remains aloof. He is determined to make his mark, albeit a dark one. Love is in the air, but tragedy lies ahead and Hogwarts may never be the same again.

Darker and a whole lot drearier, this sixth Hary Potter adventure centres on a slow-developing mystery, and the filmmakers clearly struggle to give it much pace. It's well-made and watchable, but feels like an intake of breath before the frantic finale.

After the horrific conclusion of their fifth year at Hogwarts, Harry (Radcliffe) has a solitary summer before being drafted by headmaster Dumbledore (Gambon) into the ongoing war between the wizarding forces of light and darkness. And as year six starts, Dumbledore assigns Harry to get some important information from new potions professor Slughorn (Broadbent) about the Dark Lord's background. He of course does this with the help of pals Ron and Hermione (Grint and Watson), who with Harry are also caught up in conflict more typical for 17-year-olds: raging hormones.

The title refers to the previous owner of Harry's potions textbook, who scribbled rather too-helpful notes in the margins, although this is actually an aside in the story, so the revelation of the prince's identity is a bit of a letdown. The hormonal farce is also an aside, as Harry dodges the attentions of Romilda (Anna Shaffer) so he can keep an eye on Ginny (Wright), who already has a boyfriend (Alfie Enoch). Meanwhile, Ginny's big brother Ron is being pursued by the adoring Lavender (Jessie Cave), which sparks pangs of jealousy for Hermione, who's the object of affection for the new Quiddich hunk Cormac (Freddie Stroma).

All of this provides a welcome relief from the plot's otherwise gloomy goings-on, which are photographed in shadowy drabness while eye-catching digital trickery distracts us from the pedestrian directing and editing.

Fortunately, this murky-nightmare look adds to the film's creepy undercurrent of foreboding doom, which effectively bursts forth in the film's final half hour, when the marauding Death Eaters (led by an effectively bonkers Bonham Carter) launch a nasty confrontation that sets up the saga's final chapter.

Terminator Salvation - Movie Review

John Connor is back in Terminator Salvation, and more pissed than before in the latest reincarnation of the Terminator series. Connor is the believed prophet that is leading the “resistance” in the war against the machines.

Skynet building a massive army of robots, the human race is slowly dwindling in numbers and left without the ability to fight back. The storyline is weak but the effects take over the screen for almost the entire film. The T-600 series and the newest, the T-800s, are all done very well and are pretty darned believable. The cityscape of Skynet’s headquarters, the barren wasteland, all a job well done by the special effects team. The ships and terminators themselves are very, very impressive. The sounds, the explosions, the overall feel of this movie.

Anton Yelchin and Sam Worthington put in the only good performances of the movie, minus the CGI robots, of course. The disappointing acting on the part of Christian Bale was surprising to say the least. The storyline opened very little need for real acting, but Bale failed to bring the Connor attitude. Yelchin hit Reese on the head, though, and Worthington played a superb Marcus.

Terminator: Salvation is a great movie for those of you who can get past the first movies and enjoy whats in front of you. The atmosphere, the CG, the overall feel of the film is great. The action in the movie is very well done and shows off the creativity of MCG and his team. The acting left a bad taste in my mouth but overall it was a solid film. Going into this movie thinking it should be compared to the previous films will leave you disappointed. It’s not a T2-style storyline kind of production, but an action film with a familiar story. MCG did what he could and came out with a winner – enjoy it on that level.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs - Movie Review

The characters from "Ice Age" are back and this time around they have dinosaurs for company. Not just that, they enter Dino-land for an adventure that is far better than what one saw in the first two parts, courtesy a new character called Buck, who perks up the story.

To add to that, the film is presented in 3D, something which gives an edge to this animation flick that keeps viewers of all age groups happy.

"Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" entertains, and how! The scenes are even more lovable this time around, one liners have that punchy humour to them and characters are much more identifiable. Even for those who may have missed the earlier instalments of "Ice Age", it's a no pain situation. This is because the writers draw up their character sketches well and present them all over again without making audiences restless.

So we have the members of the 'mammals' gang, the mammoth couple, getting ready for the delivery of their first baby. They have their friendly tiger for company who gets into a little depression that he is 'losing his edge' and may lose his friends once they move on to parenthood.

It's a different matter though that he gets into form once he heads out with his friends to search for Sid, who has been transported to Dino-land, courtesy his sudden love for parenthood that has made him look after three baby dinosaurs.

The fun only continues with the arrival of Buck who is their guide, guru and philosopher, all rolled into one. He has a sole 'Dino tooth' as a weapon that he earned as a saviour, from his near death experience in a fierce battle with a dinosaur a few years back.

Fun and action move at a great pace and are enhanced with some cool 3D animation that brings in a unique movie-watching experience. Volcanoes erupt, rock slides happen, dinosaurs strike, bridges collapse, trolleys snap and laughing gas makes them all uncontrollable even as Buck entertains them all through his high-on-action flashback.

In this almost perfectly packaged entertainer, what lets the film down a little is an extended end. Just when you thought that the film was over, "Ice Age" goes on to continue for some more time.

This is done in an attempt to ensure that the story of each and every character comes to a logical conclusion. However, it becomes a little boring and unnecessary.

Leaving aside this minor blemish, there is something else worth pondering over. Ten minutes into the film and you end up telling yourself that all said and done, Indian animation has a long way to go before it matches up to its Hollywood counterparts.

The problem is not just with the quality of animation but also the fact that we have seldom come up with a storyline that is imaginative, expressive and entertaining enough to cater to all segments of audiences.

No wonder, audiences continue to love the likes of "Shrek", "Ice Age" and many more and the trend will continue until we get the storyline right. Till then, we would love to go back to the sequel, which is pretty much on the cards as clearly indicated in the way "Ice Age 3" ends.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen - Movie Review -Download Funn Movie, Watch Video

One of the grandest, most-hyped Hollywood projects with million dollar robots engaged in earth shattering fights, Michael Bay has successfully joined together a live-wire comic flick which is the sequel to the extremely popular Transformers toy flick, which is by all means, money well- spent. The fight sequences and the rolling-chasing shots, keeps one betrothed. Although the juddering and bouncing action shots add to the superlative level of CGI, the robot fight shots and quite some action sequences are super speedy, scenes with such quick morphing, many-a-times making it incomprehensible to the eye.

Bay has successfully managed to take the cake, this summer, with this wonderful blend of robot jesting, thumping action sequences, romantic shots and enough beef and beauty to keep eyes rolling through the movie. Definitely recommended to be viewed on giant screen for the larger-than-life experience and enthralling S-Fx involving the malevolent Decepticon and the laudable Optimus Prime. One gets totally bamboozled with the shots involving the transformers racing past elegant Egyptian pyramids, the Fallen involved in kickass war whilst sleekly slithering past pyramids, which is a definite pleasure for those who grown up watching Transformers.
The story evolves around the teenager Sam (Shia La Beouf) and his friend the Bumblebee. Sam believes that it is time that Bumblebee went on with his own ways, having a responsible, fulfilling life away from home. In response, Bumblebee responds by playing optimistic tunes. The crazy histrionics of the Bumble Bee is bound to have his usual fan base gleam with joy.

One thus sees the Bumblebee and the Autobots trying to blend in and fine-tuning to life on Earth. Optimus Prime and his Autobots still feel that the All Spark remnants still face potential danger from the Decepticons and Megatrons, who are down but not out, and might return again to stake its claim. Starscream makes his comeback to Cybertron, taking over supreme control of the Decepticons, with greater vengeance to sweep over Earth. The Autobots though weary, are soon faced with the startling fact that Megatron’s mortal remains have been secretly whisked away by Skorpinox from the US base.

While in college, Sam soon realizes that what went on before has followed him to his present to haunt him, with Autobot head giving him surmons about how one cannot control one’s fate and destiny is bound to take its own course.

Sam’s love interest, Mikaela (Megan Fox), is shown to stay connected with him via webcam. Mikaela and Optimus Prime make Sam realize that he is here for a noble purpose and just cannot forego his role as the protagonist.

Shots of the malevolent Devastator battling it out over pyramids, is the ideal fodder for action-crazed minds.

Bay known to portray beauties, has managed to live up to his reputation by dishing out the characterized Mikaela in racy bike sequences, setting many a hearts flutter, as always.

The catch-22 situation occurs with the unexpected death of the comical character, Mudflap, who gets engulfed by the extra-terrestrial, exterminating machine. Could the death of a pivotal character snowball to a vengeful situation that would lead to the exit of another character is what one needs to look out for in the movie.

Bay has effortlessly merged the comical, romantic shots in the movie with the mind-boggling action sequences. One can expect lot more wham-bam action flicks with additional forces from the Autobots and the trio of Megatron, Starscream and Decepticons, battling it out in fierce war.

When choosing which mutant hero they would use to launch the X-MEN feature-film prequel series ORIGINS, the creators of the hugely successful franchise had a no-brainer of a decision in going with Wolverine. Not only is he the most well-known and popular X-Men character, but Wolverine--as brought expertly to life in true leading-man fashion by Hugh Jackman--was essentially the star of the three previous X-MEN movies. As the title implies, X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE is the back story of the fiery and conflicted Wolverine (named James Logan), whose mutant powers include killer claws that shoot from his knuckles and a regenerative ability that allows him to live seemingly forever. Taking a few mild liberties but staying relatively faithful to the comic-book source material, ORIGINS follows Logan from his first recognition of his mutant powers as a young child up through his infamous adamantium rebirth and the total memory loss that would subsequently fuel his angry quest.
Wolverine’s story has enough intriguing details to allow for a grown-up psychodrama in the mold of THE DARK KNIGHT, and the actors on hand--including Danny Huston as Stryker and Liev Schreiber as Logan’s half-brother, Victor (aka Sabretooth)--have the chops to deliver. Director Gavin Hood, however, opts in favor of cinematic razzle-dazzle heavy on John Woo-style action-ballet and CGI glitz. From Deadpool’s eye-popping swordplay to the tightrope-walk of a fight scene in the film’s finale, WOLVERINE is a blockbuster action film in the most fundamental sense of the word. While some might complain that the film lacks the storytelling substance of the first two X-MEN films, if it’s bang you’re after, then this certainly isn’t a waste of your bucks.

Angels and Demons - Movie Review

Angels and Demons, the novel by Dan Brown, hit the stands three years before Da Vinci Code did, the story for the movie adaptation has been tweaked to make it appear as the sequel to the movie version of Da Vinci Code. Angels and Demons is better than its sequel, but in plot, much lacking. Tom Hanks has mastered being the almost emotionless Robert Langdon who appears to be able to only think in signs and symbols.....

For those who have read and loved the book, there is slight disappointment, but that is almost always the case with such adaptations. Angels and Demons is most certainly not a boring movie, and if treated as another mystery thriller, you can even manage to have a good time.

Ron Howard's direction is indeed one of the high points of the movie. He has given us some stunning visuals that surprise both those who have read the novel and those who have not. While making a movie out of a bestselling novel, it's hard to film everything the book says, but Ron manages to bring in all the interesting scenes, but since the plot is itself a religious thriller, there is only so much you can do, and he has done that with finesse..
