After a long painful drought (thanks to the exam season and IPL matches) of plain boring to irritating films arrives Sajid Khan’s Housefull. While in totality it does fall short of being the big great summer entertainer that it is been claiming to be, it however manages to bring many laughs for you. However, eventually it settles down in familiar territory.

Housefull narrates the tale of Aarush (Akshay), a perpetually unlucky bloke and a loser in life who moves into the house of his best buddy cum another loser, Bob (Ritesh) and his wife Hetal (Lara). But things continue to go wrong for Aarush. Convinced that true love can fade away his bad luck jinx, a desperate Aarush enters into many complicated situations while seeking it. Thus enter Sandy (Deepika) and Devika (Jiah) in his life. Things complicate further with the arrival of Sandy’s angry brother Major Krishna Rao (Arjun Rampal) and Hetal’s estranged dad Batuk Patel (Boman Irani). How Aarush and Bob in an attempt to hoodwink Krishna Rao and Batuk go on creating more confusion leading to a mirthful chaos forms the rest of the plot.

Much was expected from Sajid Khan who has been literally claiming from rooftops for weeks now that he has made the year’s biggest blockbuster. Though he has not entirely let us down, you do wish he could have opted for a more innovative plot. The second half ends up being more of an Anees Bazmee film what with characters trying to hide identities and going on a lying spree. Sajid Khan also seems to have taken the slap stick humour bit quiet seriously what with so many slaps happening within the film. A ‘slapathon’ sequence reminding of his Heyy Babyy takes place too. The film loses its tempo with the introduction of Jiah’s character. But thankfully gets it back right in the second half where Akshay and Ritesh’s histrionics to hide the truth from Arjun Rampal and Boman Irani.

To give Sajid due credit, he has created many rip roaringly funny situations that are further elevated by his actors. Amongst the most hilarious sequences are most of the scenes featuring Akshay and Ritesh together. They share terrific chemistry. The climax set in the Queen of England’s Buckingham Palace is a laugh riot (literally). The film is high on glamour quotient what with three attractive bodied heroines (Deepika, Lara and Jiah) parading in skimpy outfits most of the time.

Akshay Kumar is back in terrific form, evoking huge laughter with his faced humour. Ritesh Deshmukh is another great comic talent who often gets his timing right. Arjun Rampal suits the part and looks dapper. While Deepika looks sizzling hot, Lara manages to score over her in the comedy department. Jiah tries hard and ends up being just about passable. Boman Irani goes over the top as usual. Making a come back on screen after a long gap, Randhir Kapoor playing Jiah’s Sindhi dad doesn’t get much scope. Chunky Pandey is plain irritating playing Akhiri Pasta an Italian hotelier. His fake Italiano accent grates on your nerves.

Shankar Ehsaan Loy’s music perfectly syncs in with the mood of the film. Mika sung foot tapping number Apni To Jaise Taise featuring Jacqueline Fernandez is a sure shot chartbuster and is fun to watch on screen. The editing could have been tighter especially in the first half. Vikas Sivaraman’s camera work is good especially while capturing the Italy locales.

Finally, what makes Housefull a watchable film is the fact that it aims to entertain and succeeds in doing so irrespective of its negative points. Go watch Housefull if you seek pure no hassles entertainment.

Love stories seem to be the fav genre of dream merchants here. I've a hunch, if we ever do a count of romantic films made in Bollywood, it would easily score over other genres. The question is, how innovative can a love story get in today's times? Milap Zaveri provides the answer: Man from Earth, woman from Venus.

Having penned some likable comic capers in the past [MASTI, HEYY BABYY], Milap's directorial debut JAANE KAHAN SE AAYI HAI has liberal doses of light moments dominating the first half of the film and heartache and reunion following soon after, in its post-interval portions.

JAANE KAHAN SE AAYI HAI works for its light moments mainly. It's bizarre to think of a love story between a human and an alien, but Milap garnishes it well with assorted characters, sets the story in the film industry and has several laugh-inducing moments. Resultantly, the first half is paisa vasool in filmi lingo.

But the problem arises when the focus shifts to the prem kahani in its second half. For, the story follows the trodden path [it becomes a love triangle] and embarks on the same old route that all love stories usually embark upon. If Milap had the courage to think out of the box, he should've ensured that the film remained true to its essence. Why didn't he think of an equally wacky second hour?

Notwithstanding its predictable second half, JAANE KAHAN SE AAYI HAI is a decent watch that provides ample laughs.

JAANE KAHAN SE AAYI HAI is the story of Rajesh [Riteish Deshmukh], a simple Gujarati boy who's been looking for love since he was a baby. Thoroughly unsuccessful in his endeavours, he nearly gives up till he meets Natasha [Sonal Sehgal].

Desh [Ruslaan Mumtaz] is the youngest superstar in the country. Mothers want to adopt him and their daughters want to marry him. But when will he find the girl of his dreams? Their worlds turn upside down when Tara [Jacqueline Fernandez], an alien from Venus, lands on Earth in the search of true love.

Milap tickles your funny bone at the very outset. The story of a loser, his search for true love, his 'naughty' father, his 'oversexed' friend and his experiences at his work place [on a film set] bring a constant smile on your face. In fact, one of the key factors why the first half works is because the casting is just right and the actors carry off the assigned roles so well.

But the second half fumbles because the story gets very old-fashioned. If the alien could travel all the way to earth to find love, why couldn't she profess love to the man she loves the most? Why develop human emotions all of a sudden?

This is Milap's directorial debut and he clearly shows a flair for comic entertainers. Sajid-Wajid's music is pleasant, with the title track standing out. Attar Singh Saini's cinematography is perfect.

Riteish enacts his part efficiently. That he's at home in comedy is well-known by now, but the actor is equally at ease in emotional moments and also romantic sequences. Jacqueline is easy on the eyes. In fact, she seems more comfortable this time. Vishal Malhotra is superb and contributes enormously in making the proceedings lively. Ruslaan carries the teen heart-throb look very well. Sonal Sehgal is competent.

Farah Khan is a complete natural. Satish Shah is excellent. Supriya Pilgaonkar does well too. Akshay Kumar, Priyanka Chopra, Sajid Khan and Amrita Rao make special appearances in the film.

On the whole, JAANE KAHAN SE AAYI HAI is a light-hearted entertainer targeted at the youth. It has a thoroughly entertaining first half, but a routine second half. A decent watch!

Lyric of the song is very different with English lyric. “Keh Do Zara” song is inspired by western music. Lyric of the song is really very unique and melody. Music of the song is also very appreciating which tunes on thematic lyric.

“Nacha Main” song of Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai album is sung by Sonu Nigam and Soumya Raoh. The song tunes on fast-paced band music. Lyric of the song is also very fast on the band music. “Nacha Main” song of Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai Hindi music has introduced very bold music just like disco.

Rann - Movie Review

Ramgopal Varma is itching to tell a new story in his movies. You may garland him for his efforts or loathe him if you feel letdown, but you need to hand it to him for picking up stories that defy stereotype.

This time, in RANN, the maverick film-maker does an expose on the games the heavyweights in the media play to further their interests. RGV goes into the newsrooms and also behind it and throws light on the politician-industrialist-media nexus. Also, it's an insider's account of how news channels that are greedy for ratings sensationalize stories to grab eyeballs.

On surface, you don't want to know what goes behind the scenes and how, at times, news are 'created' by vested interests. But RANN scratches the surface and opens a can of worms. RANN also mirrors the fact that just like there are good and bad people in every field, there're some rotten ones in the media too who succumb to temptations and create news to climb the ladder of success.

RANN is a serious film and RGV knows what he's talking this time. It wouldn't be erroneous to state that you recall RGV's SARKAR while watching RANN, even though the two films are as diverse as chalk and cheese. You recall SARKAR because RANN is an equally powerful film that shows a world we've only seen from the exterior.

RANN is for those who enjoy serious cinema. It's more for the intelligentsia, for the thinking viewer. Definitely not for those who seek refuge in frivolous masala capers.

Vijay Harshvardhan Malik [Amitabh Bachchan] is the founder of a private news channel, India 24/7. A upholder of journalistic ethics, his channel is battling for survival. Jay [Sudeep], his son, looks at his father's news channel purely as a business enterprise that must make profits to justify its existence. He hates that his competition [Mohnish Bahl] is doing better than him.

The story takes a turn when a corrupt politician, Mohan Pandey [Paresh Rawal], decides to use the channel to his advantage by using Vijay's son-in-law Navin [Rajat Kapoor]. Pandey aspires to be the Prime Minister and indulges in a vicious campaign against his political opponent.

Navin is the most insecure man on earth and won't rest till he becomes the number one industrialist in the country. He, in turn, involves his brother-in-law Jay in Pandey's game plan.

A film like RANN would fall into the pit if [i] its writing wouldn't be razor-sharp and [ii] the choice of actors would be incompetent. RGV's movies, generally, are embellished with competent actors who deliver super performances. In this film, every member of the cast shines in his/her role, the length of the role notwithstanding.

The writing is watertight and convincing. Besides, the subject matter has been presented in the most simplistic manner, which makes it easy to decipher. However, the episode showing Riteish's investigation tends to get confusing at one point, but the climax compensates for the minor hiccups here and there.

Amit Roy's cinematography is eye-catching. Dialogues are power-packed. In fact, one can identify with the well-penned dialogues. The background score plays a crucial role. It heightens the impact of various scenes.

Amitabh Bachchan is spectacular yet again, especially towards the finale. His speech and the way he delivers it are remarkable. Sudeep is terrific. To stand up to giants like Bachchan and Paresh Rawal is no mean achievement. Riteish is only getting better and better with every film. In fact, he surprises you constantly.

Paresh Rawal, seen in an RGV film after a long, long time, is at his vicious best. Rajat Kapoor is incredible. Mohnish Bahl gets the role of a lifetime and he sinks his teeth into it. This film should open new vistas for him. Gul Panag is natural and so easy on the eyes. Neetu Chandra does her part well. Suchitra Krishnamoorthy is too good. Rajpal Yadav contributes to some funny moments. Neena Kulkarni and Simone Singh are perfect for their parts.

On the whole, RANN is truly a well-made film. No two opinions on that. The film should be patronised by viewers of serious, sensible cinema. Recommended!

By now we are all well aware that Ram Gopal Verma’s movies don’t have songs just thrown in. His characters don’t break into a jig, nor are they singers. His movies have songs which are played in the background and suit the mood and setting of the scene. Obviously, such is the case for Rann, RGV’s brand new movie!

Besharam sung by Abhishek Naiwal who sings it like a war cry is a track which spits anger on the things happening around. It sounds more on the lines of Aarambh from the movie Gulaal.

Gali Gali Mein sung by a very effervescent JoJo is a funny yet very relevant track on the current state of our country. The music is ok, but gets too noisy at times.

The best track of the album comes in the form of Kaanch Ke Jaise sung by the ever dependable Sukhwinder Singh. It’s a track in which the protagonist laments rules. The lyrics are profound and metaphorical.

Kunal Ganjawala comes to rap on Mera Bharat Mahaan, which talks about all the ironical things happening in our country. It is ok in terms of lyrics, but the music sticks out like a sore thumb.

The title track Rann Hai is again a track which portrays anger through some wrong things happening around. Sanjeev Kohli sings it well, but the tone of the song is repetitive.

Remote Ko Baahar Phek is a fast-paced rap number sung by Jayesh Gandhi. It is more like a bunch of words have been thrown in without any rhyme with a few news channel headlines for good measure. It may work well in the movie, but as a stand-alone track it’s a naah!

Sikkon Ki Bhook The Vande Mataram Song starts off with some breaking news headlines from different news channels. Sung by Vardan Singh, this one too falls in the same genre as the previous tracks of this album.

Multiple music directors don’t do justice to this album, and the tracks have no appeal as a stand-alones. Most of them sound repetitive unlike Varma’s earlier movies which had some memorable soundtracks.

Aladin, spelled without the more familiar double D, too suffers a worse fate what with kids bullying him into rubbing lamps. Turns out it wasn't such a bad idea after all when Aladin truly rubs one and pop comes a wish-granting genie, Genius (Amitabh Bachcan). Three good-as-new wishes would end in a happily-ever-after, you'd think?

'Aladin' also marks the debut of Sri Lankan beauty Jacqueline Fernandez who is paired opposite Riteish.

Directed by Sujoy Ghosh, Aladin is the story of a boy who faces ridicule at every stage of his life because he shares his name with the protagonist of the famous fairy-tale. In the film, Aladin is a shy, young man, constantly bullied by a certain gang of boys in his college. One day, through a twist of fate, the incredible ‘Genius’ (Genie) lands up in his life and all hell breaks loose for Aladin! That genie refuses to leave Aladin alone and follows him everywhere, unwilling to leave without granting him 3 wishes!

But there is another side... an ultra-cool and uber-evil magician Ringmaster is using a magic mirror to Google our Aladin. And he wants to kill Aladin, take back the lamp and reclaim his powers (for even Ringmaster was once a genie)…
As Aladin’s 3 wishes run out and the Ringmaster closes in on him, the stage is set for an exciting battle between the forces of good and evil.

Packed with fun, music, masti, action and adventure ‘Aladin’ boasts of a visual scale as never seen before on Indian screens.

The music of the film is composed by talented duo Vishal & Shekhar. 'Aladin' is produced by Eros International in association with Sujoy Ghosh’s production company Boundscript.

His young co-stars Riteish Deshmukh and newcomer Jacqueline Fernandes do well for themselves. Deshmukh lends his Aladin a touch of earnest and goofy, which makes him believable even if not someone you care to root for. Sri Lankan beauty Jacqueline exudes a ravishing screen-presence that has the potential to be honed into something along the lines of Katrina Kaif.

A subject like this calls in for spectacular imagery laced with wonder and intrigue. And so one expects the battle between two ancient genies in the climax to be much more than standard dishoom-dishoom.

What Ghosh dishes out in its place is some half-hearted hocus-pocus, a clumsy mix of old world lore with contemporary indifference, sloppy trips to the flashback and awkward bursts of forced sentimentality.
