Wake Up Sid - Music Review

"Wake Up Sid" is an album upon which many tracks sound the same and leave a listener wanting something more.

"Wake Up Sid" staring young heartthrob Ranbir Kapoor and the sensational Konkona Sen Sharma. The film follows Siddharth Mehra aka Sid (Ranbir Kapoor) as he lives his life doing nothing. He's fresh out of college and just wants to chill. In true Bollywood fashion boy meets girl, in this case Konkona and the story unfolds from there.

The Movie has 6 soundtracks, one which is a remix. From one track to the next, the entire vibe on the album is melodious, cool, even a tad lazy. The music composition is quite impressive and the songs would sound great performed with a live band. However, the track lacks a fun upbeat number, and a classic Bollywood love ballad.

Amongst all the male vocalists we hear Kavita Seth only one on song, 'Iktara.' This adds a lot to the album as Kavita's powerful and soulful voice helps describe the emotion we can only imagine the film hopes to relay.

As for the other 4 songs and their mellowness, we turned to 'Wake Up Sid! (Club Mix)' for something inspiring to only find it has been sped up just a little. The album is one that seems can only be fully appreciated when heard in the film as they tell us a story.

In the past when we have heard the word remix we have gotten upbeat, techno, club tracks. Having heard the first 5 songs on the "Wake Up Sid" soundtrack and wanting something different and fun we could only hope that the remix would add that spice. Unfortunately the remix sounds nothing like the traditional ones we have heard and seems pretty pointless.

"Wake Up Sid" seems incomplete with just 5 tracks, it is not a soundtrack that can stand alone, rather is more of a compliment to its film. With Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy as the producers and Javed Akthar as the lyricist we expected one dance number or one classic Bollywood number for when the hero and heroine meet.. We guess the album does reflect Sid's attitude in the movie, but the album does seem to fall flat. The album will appeal to all those who enjoy listening to bands and chill music. It may be an album you enjoy listening to as you cruise down the freeway, but we think you can just pass up the album altogether.

Pritam Chakraborty now is not a new name in Indian/bollywood music world. He has already directed some most famous movie’s music - Love Aaj Kal, Life Partner, New York, Love Khichdi and now Dil Bole Hadippa. Dil Bole Hadippa movie is based on fun and entertainment of love and romance. As a lyricist of Dil Bole Hadippa, Jaideep Sahni has also tried to put some great musical tune.

“Discowale Khisko” is the first song of movie. The song is the most important of the movie and has taken maximum time. It is meaningful song on rhythmic lyrics. The song establishes “Desi” music rather than “Disco” music. It shows the proud of “Desi” music and ignores English music and dance. Great music with the combination of Punjabi Bhangara.

“Ishq Hi Rab Hai” is the second song of movie. The song begins with slow-paced background music but soon it appears with vocal tune music. It is mix-up of Punjabi song and music. Music of the song is tuning in background. It is cultural song of Punjab. Music and is very sweet but not vocal.

“Gym Shim” is rap song of Dil Bole Hadippa music which establishes also true Indian music. There are some English words in the song but music is fully dedicated to Indian, Punjabi Bhangra. It is rap song in spite of, there is all about Punjabi Bhangra music.

“Disco Khisko (Remix)” is Remix song of Dil Bole Hadippa music. The song is not much different from its original “Discowale Khisko”. Yes, there is some fast music from its original song.

“Hadippa (Remix)” song of Dil Bole Hadippa music is situational song. The song establishes the meaning of Hadippa.

“Hadippa” is last song of movie. It is original song of “Hadippa (Remix)”. Music is similar in both songs. Yes, there is slow-motion music in original song.

Overall, all the music and songs of Dil Bole Hadippa are enthusiastic to Punjabi Bhangra and Punjabi culture. There are remix song also in Dil Bole Hadippa music but all are dedicated to “Indian Desi” fun and entertainment.

Love Khichdi - Movie Review

In movie, Randeep Hooda meets seven different women/girls in his life and after the introduction of each one of them, it is clear who would be the one he would want to settle down with. However, this is not a point of discussion here. The point here is the entire journey that the protagonists take that leads to intolerance in the viewers towards the latter half.

To credit the writer-director though, he doesn't make Randeep look, act and behave like one cool stud Casanova who would sweep women off their feet. Yes, the man here does feel that he is capable of doing so but in the end, there is nothing heroic about him as he just comes across as a regular good looking man in his mid-20s.

So whether it is a much married Punjabi neighbour (Divya Dutta), a pencil thin model (Jesse Randhawa), a globe-trotting entrepreneur (Kalpana Pandit) or even his voluptuous maid (Sonali Kulkarni), he has the hots for each of one them.

Yes, he does come close to falling in love with a woman (Rituparna Sengupta) and eventually does find true love as well (in Sadaa Sayed). The only female that he avoids though is the mini skirt-wearing schoolgirl Riya Sen.

The thinks that make “Love Khichdi” interesting at junctures is the entire 'talking to the camera' narrative that the director applies. Proving the adage 'Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus', the film shows what a man and a woman would think about the same situation.

However, a couple of tracks don't work at all. The one with Rituparna Sengupta bores every time it appears in the narrative while the one with Kalpana Pandit could have been totally chopped off.

Jesse's track lasts just one scene though one wouldn't have minded seeing more of Riya Sen. As for Sonali Kulkarni, she is there mainly to get some talk heavy portions around men and their qualities.

The track that gets the most laughs is the one with Divya Dutta. She is the life of the movie for the first half of the film as she sparkles in each of the scenes that she appears.

The film though eventually boils down to be the show reel for the lead couple - Randeep and Sadaa. Sadaa gets maximum footage out of the seven women and does complete justice to her part in her debut Bollywood venture. She is beautiful, confident and her experience in films down south shows. "Love Khichdi" is bound to get her noticed.

As for Randeep, he can rest assured that despite of the film's fate at the box office, he would be seen in a new light from here on. He doesn't have the usual 'stud boy' role in the film and still manages to shine in most of his scenes.

Daddy Cool - Movie Review

The remake may not necessarily be as exciting as the original ones. That's what you recognize when you watch the Hindi version of DEATH AT A FUNERAL called DADDY COOL. Sadly, DADDY COOL is just not cool. There are plenty of reasons why..

First, this supposedly laugh riot fails to tickle your funny bone, excepting in a scene or two.

Second, the concept is more suited for a play. Setting an entire film on one location, with the story taking place in a span of a few hours, is not too electrifying.

DADDY COOL tries so hard to make you laugh, but falls flat on its face. The adverse part is, comedy in Hindi movies is now relegated to making faces on camera and that's what most actors in DADDY COOL do.

Another thing that goes against the film is its humour. It's stupid and rough. In this film, men roam around either in shirts, showing off their underpants [Chunky Pandey] or stand on a roof with just underclothes [Aftab Shivdasani] or tell people to remove their underclothes so that they can relieve themselves in a toilet [Prem Chopra asks Jaaved Jaffery to do so].

It is not understandable that what kind of comedy is this?

Chaos erupts during the funeral of Douglas [Sharat Saxena] when the grieved mourners are struck by drugs, romance, envy and a outrageous secret, all of which befall the family and friends.

Director K Murali Mohan Rao has directed several attractive films in the past, but what's this? Sure, DADDY COOL has a few entertaining moments, like the one when Rajpal Yadav reveals the secret [that Sharat Saxena was gay and Rajpal and he were lovers], but the remaining sub-plots fail to cut ice. Adding multiple sub-plots is fine as long as each sub-plot has something interesting to say, but that is what missing in the movie. Even the end is so bizarre, with members of this detached family suddenly professing love for one another.

There's just one song [Raghav Sachar] at the start [a tuneful number] and one towards the end. Dialogues are strictly okay.

With a weak screenplay on hand, there's not much the actors can do. The ones who try hard and manage are Suniel Shetty, Jaaved Jaffery, Sophie Choudry, Chunky Pandey and Prem Chopra.

On the whole, DADDY COOL fails to deliver what it promises - laughter and entertainment.

Kaminey - Movie Review

The film does not take time out for introducing the characters one by one , they get introduced by themselves. By the time titles would begin you would get engaged in the film and the people who generally make noise during the beginning of the film in the cinema hall would get silent by the end of it.

Kaminey begins on a comic and exciting note . The comic side belonging to Guddu (Shahid) and the exciting side belonging to Charlie. Priyanka aka Sweety , the marathi mulgi , does her job well in the begining itself and director Vishal manages to give film an almost ideal start (have to say almost wonderful because there is no such thing as wonderful ) . The lisping and stuttering would make you laugh at the characters but still establish that connect with them . One by one all the characters come into play and start getting connected with one another through a Guitar and a Girl . The girl being Priyanka Chopra.

Making life what it is(Kamini) around Guddu , Sweety and Charlie are characters like Bhope Bhau , Tashi , Mikhail , Lobo and Lele. All of them unique and all knotted in a complex world of chrime, money and power. The cultural diversity in the film is one thing to watch where Mikhail and his brothers are Bengali , Tashi and Lobo are Christians , Guddu who is actually Sanjay Sharma is a Hindu and Bhope Bhau and Sweety being Marathi.There are also some foreigners in the film .Bhope Bhau who is a true Marathi Manus and against all north indians has been briliantly played by Amol Gupte . He has done full justice to the character and has played the part of an aspiring politician who uses this “Marathi Manus Ideology” for getting a ticket to contest in the elections. Character of Anmol Gupte has maximum weightage than other characters in movie. The film is made up of these so many different Characters and it completely belongs to them. All characters have same importance and everyone of them has a mean(kamini) side. The director has even gone ahead and shown the mean side of a small Kid who also plays a very small and comic part in the film. Every character has been perfectly presented and it is these characters that make the film so strong.


Kaminey for its maximum length belongs to Shahid and it won’t be wrong to say that it is completely his film. It is his best and most mature performance till date and his hard work comes across on the screen. He has worked really hard for both of the characters and has put up a magnificent performance. The two characters being completely different , Shahid has got a rare opportunity to express all different shades of a personality on-screen. His is the toughest part and to act that well shows his progress as an actor. He has already become the new superstar and now his acting skills would also get appreciated which would further increase his stardom for sure. Pankaj sir will be so proud of him after watching the film. Vishal has given him sufficient space to perform and he has delivered according to his expectations. Though Priyanka’s part in the film was small but surely a very important one and one that required great efforts from her too. She also has worked hard and given her best. She is just fabulous in the film and her chemistry with Shahid is something to watch out for. She plays this part of a crazy marathi girl naturally and would certainly make you smile. She is lovable and for that matter both Shahid-Priyanka as a couple are also lovable and look cute. They both are stars and of the type who can also act. Chandan Roy is also good as Mikhail.


The comic caper variety that Vishal has attempted in the film has worked like wonders. It is officially now first of its kind. The story is different to an extent but what is best is the handling that Vishal has given to the story. The screenplay is great and there are several memorable sequences in the film. The climax of the film is what you call ‘climax’ exactly and it is this part which decides the fate of the film. It is this part that will please the bulk of the spectators and would make it a sure shot hit.

The cinematography by Tassaduq Hussain is top notch . Several locations of mumbai have been shown in a never before manner and the sequences with Rains have also been shot perfectly. The steady-cam shots which are on the move have also been done in a beautiful manner and are technically sound . The music of the film is no doubt great and it also adds a lot to the film. The dialogues of the film are just great and have been written very well. The actors have very well delivered them too in the way they should have been.

Vishal Bhardwaj has done absolutely fabulous job. This one is a completely different film from Omkara and he has again done a great job.

Love Aaj Kal

The mighty mysterious love, which has remained unexplained even after tomes of literature has been written about it and tones of celluloid consumed, finds a delicate, touching expression in director Imtiaz Ali’s film Love Aaj Kal. Through two parallel love stories, both equally moving and both relatable, the movie tells its audience that Love Aaj is no different from Love Kal (yesterday) even though the way of expressing it for today’s i-pod generation may be different from that of the lovers of yore when just the meeting of eyes or passing of a smile could throb a heart more than a rocking bed on a one-night stand.

London 2009. Jai (Saif Ali Khan) and Meera (Deepika Padukone) click on their very first meeting in a pub and end up sharing their first kiss the same night. They don’t realize they are a couple until their friends point it out to them. And just when it seems they would walk hand-in-hand into the sunset, rears its head the modern-day monster that has doomed many love stories - Career! He has an American dream of clinching a job in Golden Gate, San Francisco, while she wants to make a career out of restoring the old monuments of Delhi. Clearly, their ways are separate, and, like any ‘practical’ couple, they mutually decide to split and even throw a break-up party.

But, can the matters of heart be resolved so easily? Is it so easy to snap the heart strings and move on?

Delhi 1965. Veer Singh (Saif, again) is left thunderstruck when he first sees Harleen (Giselle Monteiro - a beautiful newcomer whose name was strangely withheld). It’s a love mostly expressed in stares and suppressed smiles. But then, she goes away to Calcutta, leaving Veer lifeless, until he listens to his heart, and, driven by his love, overcomes the many odds piled up against him, to make Harleen his.

But will Jai go the Veer way?

Imtiaz Ali has crafted the film superbly by not just juxtapositioning the love stories of Jai and Veer but also following a non-linear route to tell each story. The dots are connected in an aesthetically beautiful way to give ‘Love Aaj Kal’ the structure of a complex origami that makes complete sense when all its segments come together to unravel a pretty design. And a fat share of credit for this should go to the editor, Aarti Bajaj, who does an incredibly good job.

To top it, Saif Ali Khan gives the best performance of his career. Unlike the painful performances we saw in Tashan and Race, here’s a Saif who is subtle, polished and spot on in his dual portrayal of Jai and Veer. There’s a scene where Saif is nonchalantly telling Rishi Kapoor that Deepika, from whom he has split, will move on in life, have new friends and new relationships. It’s quite a sight to see how his expression and tone changes from being dismissive to painfully sad by the end of the same long dialogue. It’s the stuff only seasoned actors can pull off.

Deepika Padukone is an image of grace in a role that requires her to talk more through the eyes than words. She doesn’t ham, nor is there any apparent effort on her part to underplay her character. Rishi Kapoor is good, but a special mention ought to be made of the girl who plays Harleen. She’s a pretty, delicate damsel who gets just two-three dialogues in the film but still leaves her image in your mind. Rahul Khanna, playing the new man in Deepika’s life, has a very small part which he plays convincingly

LUCK - Movie Review

Mafia king pin Kareem Musa (Sanjay Dutt) takes the game of betting to an altogether different level by involving humans as betting objects who are made tofight their own luck to survive. Every year his trusted aide Tamang (Danny) assembles for him in South Africa, 20 participants handpicked from across the globe who have a proven record of extreme luck. Betters across the globe put their money on them through Musa’s syndicate. During the new season, amongst the participants are Ram (Imran) a white collar job youth who is hell bent on earning big money to compensate the huge fraud his scamster father was reason for, Ayesha (Shruti) who has her own personal agenda, Retd. Col Singh (Mithun) who desperately needs money for his wife’s operation, Shortcut (Chitrashi) a Pakistani camel racer girl who dreams of buying a Lexus with the prize money and Raghav (Ravi Kissen) a serial murderer. What happens after these participants are put into extremely dangerous life taking games of luck and who manages to win the big jackpot amongst them forms the rest of the film.

Luck begins with an exciting opening sequence that gets your heart in your mouth watching a blindfolded Dutt cross the multiple railway lines with trains running around in fast speed. Soham Shah shows tremendous progress as a technician with Luck. He succeeds in getting you all hooked throughout the first half. However, in the second half the pacing drops in between but then picks up yet again towards the pre-climax. Soham and Rensil D’Silva’s screenplay strikes the perfect balance between a slick action thriller and a mass entertainer. Dialogues are citeee worthy at places. Soham also gets big points in his casting of the veterans. It is almost after 20 years that the trio of Dutt-Mithun and Danny has come together for any film. They were last cast together in Jeete Hain Shaan Se (1988). However, the climax could have been more effectively shot and culmination slightly less over the top.

Amongst the actors, sadly the young brigade disappoints whereas the veterans shine big time. Imran Khan though earnest, is most of the times expressionless. Kamal Haasan’s daughter Shruti Haasan has a striking screen presence but needs a crash course in dialogue delivery. Sanjay Dutt has achieved a mastery of sorts of playing the big hearted ‘bhai’ and here too he is in his safe zone. Dutt appears super chilled out and enjoying himself. Mithun Chakraborty is extremely impressive. Danny is a scene stealer in many sequences. It is great to see the veteran actor back in top form in a very meaty role. Ravi Kissen is terrific. Chitrashi Rawat is good. Snita Mahey playing Dutt’s team member is super hot.
