Blue - Movie Review

Read more! Cast :: Sanjay Dutt,Akshay Kumar, Lara Dutta, Katrina Kaif, Rahul Dev, Kylie Minogue.

BLUE, the most awaited movie of the year, with its canvas as huge as the ocean, comes alive on the Hindi screen this Friday. Like every biggie, this one also comes with the baggage of monumental expectations. With tremendous hype surrounding it, the inescapable question that crosses your mind is, will BLUE live up to those colossal expectations?

Let me keep it concise and to the point. You haven't watched something like this on the Hindi screen before. Never ever!

It requires courage, willpower, fortitude, vision and of course, the financial backing to accomplish a project of this magnitude. And debutante director Anthony D'Souza puts his skills and the financial resources to best use. BLUE is not merely a stunning looking film, it's also a well structured film. Most importantly, it's a solid entertainer that packs in so much in those 1.58 hours.

Final word? Go, grab a ticket, if you haven't booked one yet. This under-sea treasure hunt is a kickass film. A must-see for all those who love adventure flicks.

BLUE is set in the sun-soaked white sand beaches of Bahamas. Sagar [Sanjay Dutt] is a simpleton, while his friend Aarav [Akshay Kumar] is a rich, ambitious businessman.

Sagar's brother Sameer aka Sam [Zayed Khan] has inadvertently managed to rankle the mafia in Bangkok [Rahul Dev]. He flees Bangkok and arrives in Bahamas. But the dangerous men reach Bahamas too. Sagar is the sole person who can bail him out from this crisis, but to save his brother, Sagar has to wrestle with the ghost of his dead father.

If you're a die-hard moviegoer, you'd draw parallels with a lot of international projects [especially THE DEEP] that were set in the ocean. In Bollywood, flashes of the Dharmendra - Jeetendra starrer SAMRAAT cross your mind instantaneously, but comparing the two is akin to comparing chalk and cheese.

BLUE grabs your attention from its opening titles itself. The marine life, which you may've watched on National Geographic Channel or Animal Planet, comes alive in all splendour at the start itself.

The story is uncomplicated and Anthony D'Souza garnishes it beautifully. If the aquatic life keeps your eyes wide open, the action sequences are sure to make your jaws drop to your knees. The bike chase at the start, yet another chase subsequently, the chase soon after the interval [atop a running train] is simply astounding.

Anthony's expertise comes to the fore in several sequences. One sequence that needs to be singled out is when Sanju narrates the tragic past, how he was responsible for his father's death. It's simply incredible!

Major portions of the film have been filmed in the ocean and you can't stop admiring and appreciating the enormous contribution of the underwater cinematographer [Pete Zuccarini]. The lighting in those sequences deserves special mention. Also, the underwater sequences, which feature aquatic life like puffer fish, stingrays and sharks, hold tremendous appeal. Cinematography [Laxman Utekar] is gorgeous.

On the flip side, the climax could've been more impactful. The villain's track looks clichéd, but you tend to overlook the minor aberration since the film never falls prey to mediocrity.

Anthony D'Souza is a director to watch. This film has style as well as substance. Also, it requires courage and conviction to think out of the box and most importantly, execute the material with panache. There's not much scope for music in an action thriller, yet A.R. Rahman's score suits the requirements. The Kylie Minogue track - 'Chiggy Wiggy' - is already popular. Sanju and Lara's romantic track - 'Aaj Dil' - is sensuous. The song at the end credits - 'Fiqrana' - has a lot of energy.

Sound design [Resul Pookutty] is fantastic. Action scenes [James D. Bomalick and R.P. Yadav] are a treat and, in fact, one of the mainstays of the film. Dialogues [Mayur Puri] are effective, while the screenplay [Anthony D'Souza and Jasmine D'Souza] is well thought-out, especially towards the second hour.

Sanjay Dutt carries his part well, although he looks very well-fed in some scenes. Akshay Kumar steals the show with a sterling performance. This would easily classify amongst his best works. Zayed Khan is highly competent. This, despite the fact that he's sharing the screen space with two hugely experienced actors.

Lara Dutta has never looked so good before. Though the story revolves around the guys, you can't overlook Lara's small but significant contribution to the film. Katrina Kaif looks gorgeous and performs exceedingly well. The feminine charm [at the start specifically] would send the youth in a frenzy. Rahul Dev is first-rate. Kabir Bedi is hardly there.

On the whole, BLUE has style as well as substance. The film has everything going in its favour, right from its incredible star cast to the superb action scenes to the hitherto unseen marine life to the tremendous hype and hoopla. At the box-office, BLUE will strike like a hurricane in the festive week. It should set new benchmarks in days to come. In short, the business will be humungous.

Kurbaan - Music Review

Read more! Cast :: Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Sunil Shetty, Dia Mirza, Om Puri, Kirron Kher.

The music of Dharma Productions’ latest offering, Kurbaan, based on Jihad is an album to watch out for. The movie has generated quite some buzz off late thanks to a picture of Kareena and Saif.

With Niranjan Iyegar choosing the curve of the alphabets in his way and Salim-Sulaiman providing the notes to his thought-spinners, the result is mesmerizing. The album has some of the best Sufi tracks composed in recent times.

The album which starts on high notes concludes with a disappointing title track. But the remaining 4 tracks are of high caliber. Niranjan Iyengar and Salim-Sulaiman have written/composed the perfect album for a movie like Kurbaan.

Shukran Allah
Song from Sonu Nigam is always a delight. But equal credits to Salim and Shreya Ghosal for their beautiful playback singing. Song moves in a smooth rhythm, you will love the sounds of guitar.

Dua
Sukhwinder Singh and Kailash Kher comes together again after disappointing last effort. But this time it works. The main USP of this song is it's lyrics. Very clear and meaningful.

Ali Maula
Ali Maula picks up a bit slow but turns out to be magnificent song. Backed by powerful music, reckoning song for singer and music composer Salim.

Rasiya
It's more of a theme song for Kurbaan. Again strong music raises the tempo of this song.

Kurbaan Hua
The show stealer for sure. This is a Hindi rock song from talented rock music experts Vishal - Shekhar. This type of songs do tend to sound similar but it has unique touch comparable to no other song.

Ali Maula - Remix
This was not required, music is too loud and suppress the singers voice. Remix of Kurbaan Hua would have been better.

Acid Factory - Movie Review

Read more! Cast :: Fardeen Khan, Aaftab Shivdasani, Dino Morea, Dia Mirza, Danny Denzongpa.

Sanjay Gupta's back and yet again with a Hollywood film rip-off.

Taken from Hollywood’s 2006 psychological crime-thriller Unknown, Acid Factory too begins with the protagonists trapped in a chemical factory.

Admittedly, the plot arouses interest: you have six people trapped in an acid factory, and here's the best part—they don’t remember a thing.

Suffering from temporary amnesia, all six have forgotten their identities and how they got there. They get their clues from phone calls made by a mob boss (Irrfan Khan) and wonder who among them is their friend or the foe.

A cop (Gulshan Grover) is following Irrfan Khan’s lead and keeps losing trails blaming the criminals for being "bloody clever or bloody smart" without admitting he's bloody dumb.

The film then takes the predictable course – the six understand that a kidnapping has happened and try identifying the kidnappers from the hostages. This is the most interesting portion in the film that you wish was further exploited.

Had the makers delved into the suspicions, insecurities and hapless condition of the protagonists, the film could've made for a gripping brain-teaser.

Meanwhile, a hundred chases happen, cars get blown up, and people get killed. The ending gets wrapped up all too abruptly even delicately hinting at a sequel.

In true-blue Sanjay Gupta style, there's an item song that borders on soft porn, and the world of crime is portrayed as being inhabited by beautiful, rich, quirky people who travel in limousines and dress sharp.

Stunts, chases and fights take over the better part of the film. Also like in many Hindi films based abroad, all the protagonists are Indian right from the crime boss to the cop honcho.

The cast does exceedingly well. Manoj Bajpai adds humour as the eccentric but dangerous wheeler-dealer; Irrfan Khan makes for a spiffy crime lord; and Dino Morea is great fun as the wise-cracking loudmouth.

Dia Mirza, the only lady among the lads, acts her part perfectly even excelling in the stunts that one hears she performed herself.

Danny Denzongpa is dependably good. In the central roles, Fardeen Khan and Aftab Shivadasani are fairly good, though the rest of the cast proves to be the scene-stealers.

Director Suparn Varma had earlier made Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena in 2005. In Acid Factory, he attempts to add his own inputs while retaining the Sanjay Gupta approach of storytelling. To an extent, Acid Factory works as a gimmicky thriller but loses direction once the novelty wears off.

Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani - Music Review

Read more! Cast :: Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Upen Patel, Darshan Jariwala, Asrani, Salman Khan, Govind Namdeo, Smita Jaykar, Navneet Nishan, Mithilesh Chaturvedi, Zakir Hussain, Jagdeep.

Rajkumar Santoshi's next venture, "Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani", is scheduled to hit the silver screens on Nov 6.

Santoshi, who has failed to do a good job at the box office for quite some time, has tried his hand sat comedy after his debut movie `Andaz Apna Apna`.

He feels that the movie buffs will enjoy film and his lead pair Ranbir Kapoor-Katrina Kaif.

"Katrina has tried her hand at comedy for the first time and has done a good job," Santoshi said.

"Ranbir plays Prem in the film. It`s a love story and Prem also stands for love," he said.

Santoshi's last film was `Halla Bol` which had Ajay Devgan in the lead role.

The filmmaker is working on his new projects `Jis Lahore Nahin Dekhiya Woh Jamiya Nahin`, which is an adaptation of Asghar Wajahat`s play and `Kanwal Pal Singh Gill`, which is based on the Khalistan movement.

He said he will announce the project in October and added that he would start work on `
Jis Lahore Nahin Dekhiya Woh Jamiya Nahin` after the release of "Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani"

With most of the soundtracks which have worked in the recent past, the one common element in them is Pritam. He can be safely termed as the ‘hit machine’. With, Irshad Kamil penning some thought spinners the album APKGK turns out quite wholesome.

Starting with the track with the infectious line “kuch yaar nazar nahi aata…ghar baar nazar nahi aata…sansaar nazar nahi aata…Jab pyaar hota hai”, Main Tera Dhadkan Teri (KK & Alisha Chinoy) is a fast paced high energy number. KK sings with full dhamaal & the song will surely get you on the dance floor. The Remix comes packed with more energy, but still as a listener I still prefer the original.

Get ready for the déjà vu feel with Tera Hona Laga Hoon (Atif Aslam & Alisha Chinoy) it’s a soft, true Atif Aslam style number. This will catch the attention of the listener instantly, like the singers previous hits. The remix is also quite a good hear and makes you hum the number.

It is a signature Pritum tune, with elements of rock/pop Aa Jaao Meri Tamanna (Javed Ali) sounds smooth n subtle the Javed Ali style. The remix is passable, with just some more electronic beats added to the original.

You have heard the Ajab tracks now comes the GAZAB track of the album. It is sung by 3 different singers and each track is a worthy chart topper. Check out the diff instruments used in the background in each version..!

•Tu Jaane Na (Kailash Kher) is beautiful, serene and a winner all the way..! Kailash as always is commendable.
•Tu Jaane Na-Reprise (Atif Aslam), this has to be on the best Atif has sung after this his fan base might just increase. Loved the tabla in the background.
•Tu Jaane Na-Unplugged (KK), KK sounds diff and he does a great job. I can put my money down that this is a sure shot HIT. The chorus just blends perfectly with KK’s vocals
•Tu Jaane Na-Remix(Atif Aslam) , is just like playing with the sanctity of this beautiful number. Naah..!

Prem Ki Naiya(Neeraj Shridhar) is a fun n peppy number, providing some masti in the soundtrack typical Pritam style. The remix comes with lots of beats but since the original number is peppy the remix doesn’t hurt much n goes easy on your ears..!

Oh By God (Sunidhi Chauhan, Mika Singh & Hard Kaur), is the regular fast paced number with some rap thrown in and turns out quite lively to hear on the dance floor..!

With the lead pair of Ranbir and Katrina so fresh, the soundtrack perfectly complements their styles. The songs picturized on them would be a treat to watch.

Jail - Music Review

Read more! Cast :: Neil Nitin Mukesh, Mugdha Godse, Manoj Bajpai, Arya Babbar, Chetan Pandit, Ghanshyam Garg, Rahul Singh.

After the realistic look on the "Fashion" industry, Madhur Bhandarkar is all set to provide the audience a peek into the realities of prison, with his upcoming drama flick "Jail". With a star cast boasting of names like Neil Nitin Mukesh and Mugdha Godse in the main leads and Manoj Bajpai and Ashish Sharma in the supporting cast, the movie is all set to hit the theaters on November 6, 2009. It has been produced by Shailendra Singh and will come out under the banners "Percept Picture Company" and "Bhandarkar Entertainment".

Jail is one of the most awaited movies of 2009 from the much-acclaimed director of Fashion, Madhur Bhandakar, who is always up to doing something unique.

The album has only four songs, but they are a perfect blend of melodious and fast-paced numbers.

"Sainya Ve"
The new music duo Sharib and Toshi gave made a simple yet so beautiful song Sainya Ve. Toshi has even sung this song and that too with utmost emotion. Great song overall.

"Milke Yun Lagaa"
We have heard this type of songs before from Sharib - Toshi way too many times. The genre is sufi specifically. An average song.

"Bareily Ke Bazzar Mein"
Not sure how many love this type of songs. Only for desi junta. Although music is nice.

"Daata Sun Le"
Wonderful lyrics and fabulous voice of Lata ji powers this song but music is plain crappy. Could have been lot better.

"Sainya Ve - Rock Version"
Rock version also features Neil Nitin Mukesh's voice. He has sung a part of this song, an average performance i must say, not too good. Lyrics remains same but music is different and equally good as the original.

"Bareily Ke Bazzar Mein - Remix"
You will hate this song. Cheap English lyrics used and then there is a background voice of person saying something in Rajasthani - 'pallo latke thaaro'. Terrible, they should have removed this song completely. My ears are crying.

"Sainya Ve - Remix"
Now they are beating their title song to pulp. This remix was not necessary.

"Daata Sun Le - Contemporary Remix"
Tabla and bells tries to brings some soul into this song along with chorus playback voices. One thing is for sure, this song will be used in morning school prayers and fullstop

Wake Up Sid - Movie Review

Read more! Cast :: Ranbir Kapoor, Konkona Sen Sharma, Anupam Kher, Supriya Pathak, Namit Das, Shikha Talsania, Rahul Khanna.

The film begins, Sid (Ranbir Kapoor) celebrates after his final exams with his two best friends, Laxmi (Shikha Talsania) and Rishi (Namit Das). In a rare display of realism in casting, Sid’s friends and the rest of his classmates aren’t all potential Miss Indias or cool dudes. They look like regular college kids. Laxmi is smart but struggles with her weight, and Rishi is an average-looking guy eager to propose to his girlfriend.

Sid meets ‘new girl in the city’ Aisha (Konkona Sen Sharma) in a college party farewell. It’s her first day in Mumbai, where she hopes to become a journalist. Sid shows her the town after agreeing that they will nothing more than friends. He bails on his job at his dad’s bathroom fixture company to help Aisha get settled in Mumbai. Around seven years older to him in age, Aisha has arrived from Kolkata to become a writer. They gradually become good friends and he even helps her in settling down in her newly rented flat.

Then Sid learns that he’s failed his exams, while Laxmi and Rishi have passed and graduated. He vents his anger against them and his parents as well, who kick him out of the house and cut him off financially. He moves in with Aisha, only to discover that he has no ambition and no life skills. For the first time, Sid has to learn responsibility and find a direction.

All hell breaks lose in Sid’s life when he fails in his graduation exams. He has a tiff with best friend since childhood. When his father confronts him over his rude behaviour with his mom, in a fit of rage Sid leaves his house forever. He heads straight to Aisha’s flat. Both start staying together with an understanding they are just friends and nothing else. Anyways, Aisha considers Sid not her type since according to her he is still a boy and not a ‘man’ yet. As days pass by Sid’s non disciplinary behaviour starts grating on Aisha’s nerves. But Sid mends his ways faster and thus begins his journey from a boy to becoming a man.

As his character develops, Sid learns empathy from Laxmi, the value of friendship from Rishi, and self-sufficiency from Aisha. Sid’s maturity is so stunted that he celebrates every minor step toward independence as though he just discovered electricity.

Ranbir has delivered one of his finest performances and has succeeded in showing the gradual change in his character. Konkona plays the perfect opposite to his character and suits the role to the T. Their awkward chemistry is likeable. Rahul Khanna in a small role leaves his mark. His expressions reveal a lot when Konkona admits she hates Jazz. The actors playing Ranbir’s friends are very good. Veterans Anupam Kher and Supriya Pathak are wonderful. New girl Kainaz Motivala playing Ranbir’s colleague is very impressive.

Director Ayan Mukerji is patient enough to give the audience an accurate picture of who Sid is and then takes the time to show Sid’s incremental progress, without the movie ever feeling slow. There are a few musical montages, but no unnecessary dance numbers to stop the movie’s momentum.

Do Knot Disturb - Movie Review

Read more! Cast :: Govinda, Ritesh Deshmukh, Sushmita Sen, Lara Dutta, Sohail Khan, Ranvir Shorey, Rajpal Yadav, Himani Shivpuri, Rituparna Sengupta, Manoj Pahwa.

The movie stars Govinda as Raj, a businessman trying to hide an affair from his suspicious wife, Kiran (Sushmita Sen). His wife Kiran owns the company named Saxena Group of industries in which Raj works for, so if he were to get caught with his mistress, Dolly (Lara Dutta), he’d lose his high-paying job as well as his marriage.

Raj hires a waiter to pose as Dolly’s boyfriend in order to cheat a private investigator hired by Kiran. In return, the waiter, Govardan (Ritesh Deshmukh), gets an upgraded private hospital room for his mother, as well as a chance to play house with the lovely Dolly.

Dolly also has a jealous ex-husband, played by Sohail Khan, who shows up to slap people. Slapping is the foundation and very common in Do Knot Disturb’s to make attempts at humor.

The movie’s other attempts at comedy center around men making lewd gestures at women. When the male characters aren’t slapping each other, they’re trying to grope or hump the nearest female character.

You know when you enter a film like Do Knot Disturb, logic should be the last thing on your mind considering the names it comprises of but then what you encounter is a huge let down. A two timing hubby is no more a originality on screen and Govinda and David Dhawan have churned out many films revolving around this theme earlier. But this time around they fail together. In the name of comedy in here you have actors yelling at the top of their voices or breaking into female tones for no reasons, outdated situational jokes about a dead body going around a hotel, slapping spree meant to derive laughs, faulty characterizations. The film is supposedly completely set in Delhi and the characters too keep saying this but it appears not a single frame seems to have been shot in the capital city. Dubai-Abu Dhabi has been passed off as Delhi. In fact Ritesh’s hotel is shown at a sea side with yachts parked. The makers seem well prepared to take their audience on a ride it seems.

Govinda can create a laugh riot amongst the masses if he decides to but here barring a few comic sequences he is mostly resorted to yelling his lines in the name of humour. Ritesh on the other hand is much subdued and likeable as the greedy waiter. Lara Dutta looks gorgeous and acts ably and displays good flair for comedy. Sushmita Sen is hardly there in the first half and practically ignored in the second right till the climatic moments. Ranvir Shorey is funny but why such a horrendous wig for him that threatens to fall any moment. Sohail Khan’s character could have been developed further as he is genuinely funny in his angry moments. Rajpal Yadav and Manoj Pahwa manage a few laughs. But one wonders why makers feel Rajpal Yadav needs to be whacked around in all his roles to get laughs! Rituparna hardly gets any scope.

Do Knot Disturb is a comeback of the No.1 series trio of producer Vashu Bhagnani, director David Dhawan and Govinda but alas it is no where close to any of their earlier ventures!
